Pulp Era
By James Carpio
Pulp Era: Cinematic Adventures in the Yesteryear! is a complete standalone
tabletop roleplaying game that will allow you to take your players for an adventurous trip to a bygone era. Pulp Era is an “Over the Top” cinematic modification to The Basic System (TBS) rules developed by Dilly Green Bean Games. As with its parent system TBS, the rules are very simple and easy to learn.
The Pulp Serials had their origins in the beloved silent films of the early twentieth century which in turn were spawned by the prototype pulp novels or ‘penny dreadfuls’ of the 19th Century. With the success of these films and others like them, the serial became a Hollywood mainstay. These short films, each thrilling weekly installment ending with a cliffhanger to bring the audience back week after week, brought excitement and romance to the harsh reality of life in the Great Depression.
Each week, moviegoers thrilled to the Adventures of Captain Marvel, the Green Hornet, Flash Gordon, Heroes of the West, Zorro’s Fighting Legion, The Masked Marvel, Buck Rogers, Darkest Africa, the New Adventures of Tarzan, Dick Tracy’s G-Men, the Fighting Devil Dogs and the Drums of Fu Manchu, to name just a few.
This game is intended to help bring to life some of those early audiences’ joy and wonder at seeing larger than life heroes in a world that desperately needed them. The rules focus on the heroes of the pulps; building memorable characters to capture the fun and dramatic atmosphere of this fast-paced genre. If you have ever dreamed of searching for lost cities deep within the heart of the Amazon or escaping the death trap of some diabolical mastermind in his mountain fortress, then sit back and enjoy as we take you on a wild ride into the amazing world of the pulps!
